Today’s Real East Carolina Bride entry comes to us from Megan, a bride whose Corolla wedding is coming up in June 2017.
My name is Megan Browning. I am a 5th grade teacher in Greensboro, North Carolina. My fiancé is Austin Ray; he is a police officer. We met in college in 2010 at a party. I was attending a small college in Bristol, VA and he was attending UNC Charlotte. I traveled to Charlotte to visit a friend from high school, we went to a party and I met Austin there. We talked a little bit that night, but not much. We ended up hanging out a little the next day as my friend from high school had already made friends with him. When I left to return to school on Sunday, he asked my friend for my number and texted me later that night to make sure I got home safe and we just never stopped talking.
We had been together for 5 years before he proposed. I went to a friend’s wedding in Savannah, GA; I was a bridesmaid in her wedding. Austin was unable to attend because of work, when I got home he was sitting on the couch waiting for me. I noticed our dog was in her crate, which is unusual when we are home, I asked him why she was in there because she was crying. He told me to go let her out, so I did. When I walked in the room, he followed me and asked me if I had seen her fuzz. She often pulled out all the fuzz from her stuff toys. Since I had just gotten home from a long trip, I was slightly annoyed at the fuzz and said “yes, why didn’t you clean it up before I came home?” and continued playing with the dog. He told me to look again and upon further inspection I saw that he had taken her “fuzz” and wrote “Will you marry me?” on top of her crate. When I turned around he was down on one knee with the ring in one hand and his phone in the other recording my reaction.
I am most excited about getting to share this with our family and closest friends. I am dreading all the planning. There are so many little details to consider and so many opinions from various people to take into account, its stressful just thinking about it.
At the moment the only plan we have in place is the venue. We are getting married at Historic Whalehead in Corolla, NC. We will be getting married on the South Lawn in front of the house and the reception will be on the North Lawn closer to the Currituck Lighthouse. I do have my dress and my bridesmaids have their dresses. We are doing a royal blue and yellow wedding. We will have yellow tulips as the main flowers.
I decided to become an East Carolina Bride because I grew up in Richlands, NC and always wanted to have a wedding on the beach. After getting the ring from my best friend I began looking for my dream spot on the beach to hold our ceremony. It became very clear very quickly that I was not going to be able to afford most of these places. In these times there are more and more brides trying to get married on a pretty small budget and I want to share my story so that they can see it is still possible to have their dream regardless of their budget.
